40th week of pregnancy Week
Congratulations on reaching week 40 of your pregnancy! 🥳 This means that it’s only a matter of time before you meet your baby. But remember , labor prediction isn’t an exact science and some babies may want to stay inside a little longer. If your little guest still hasn’t decided to come into the world, take comfort in the knowledge that he or she could be here at any moment . Get plenty of rest this week, listen to your body’s signals, and enjoy that big moment! 💖
What You Need to Know at 40 Weeks Pregnant
👉 You’re finally at the finish line! But that doesn’t mean your baby will come right away. Many babies can stay inside for a few days or even a week past their due date. Your womb is still a warm and safe place for them!
👉 Pelvic pressure is a real thing! Your baby is probably already positioned downward and ready for birth. This can make it hard to walk, forcing you to literally walk like a penguin . 😂 You may also experience sudden, sharp pains in your groin from pinched nerves.
👉 The average baby weight is around 3.4 kg! But of course, every baby is different. While some are tiny, some can come into the world as a powerful mini athlete! 🏋️♂️
👉 If the birth is delayed, a biophysical profile (BPP) can be performed. This test includes an ultrasound and a non-stress test to check the baby’s health. It also checks whether the amniotic fluid is sufficient.
👉 This week can be a test of patience! Constant thoughts like “Have contractions started?” , “Is this movement different?” may be on your mind. But the most important thing is to follow your baby’s movements carefully . If you feel a significant decrease in movements, call your doctor immediately . Remember, your baby will arrive on time and healthy! 💕
Little One is Ready! What is Baby Doing in Week 40? 👶 ✨
Your baby’s organs are now fully developed and he/she is ready for the outside world! 🌎 🎉 This week, his/her hair and nails continue to grow and his/her lungs are getting stronger for his/her first breath. He/she can now respond to sounds, blink his/her eyes, clench his/her fists and even move his/her head !
What’s more, he’s moving down into the birth canal and getting into position. Most babies are expecting in a head-down position this week, but some may still be lying on their sides or feet down . If your baby still hasn’t gotten into position, your doctor will follow up.
Are you ready? Because the little one is counting the days to step into the outside world! ⏳ 💕
How Big Is The Baby? Baby’s Height And Weight At 40 Weeks Pregnant 🍉 📏
At 40 weeks, your baby is the size of a huge watermelon! 🍉 On average, a full-term baby can be about 50-55 cm long and weigh between 3 and 4.5 kg . Of course, every baby is different, so it may be a little smaller or bigger. But no matter what, the day you will hold him in your arms is very close! 💕
How Many Months Is 40 Weeks Pregnant?
As you guessed, you have completed 9+ months with 40 weeks of pregnancy! 🎉 Congratulations, you have finished the marathon! But remember, your baby will decide when he wants to come. 😉
40th Week of Pregnancy Ultrasound and Checkups 🏥
This week, your doctor may order a biophysical profile (BPP) and a non-stress test (NST) . These tests evaluate the baby’s movements, heart rate, and muscle tone. An ultrasound may also be done to see amniotic fluid levels .

If these tests show that the baby will be safer in the outside world, the doctor may suggest inducing labor . But if all is well, just wait! Your baby won’t be stuck inside forever, it’s almost there! ⏳ 💕
Pregnancy Symptoms in Week 40 🤰 ⏳
We’re in the final weeks and you’re probably still struggling with the same symptoms . Be patient! 🕰️ Only your baby knows when he or she decides to come. Here are the symptoms that may be the most challenging for you this week:
🥴 Leg Cramps
Cramps that come on suddenly in the middle of your sleep? Gently stretching your calf and hamstring muscles can help relieve some of this discomfort. Remember, eating foods that contain magnesium can also help reduce cramps!
🫣 Pelvic Pressure
You may feel more pressure in your groin and lower abdomen as your baby settles further into your pelvis. This discomfort is completely normal! If the pain becomes regular, it could be a sign that labor is near!
😵💫 Sleep Problems
Your mind may be constantly asking, “When will I go into labor?” If you can’t sleep, do a light, calming activity : read a book, journal, or meditate . But don’t start cleaning the kitchen in the middle of the night or doing Zumba! 😆
🥱 Fatigue
Not being able to sleep makes you feel tired even more, right? 😩 But the good news: You can try to rest whenever you can during the day. Even mini naps will be good for you!
🤕 Contractions (Contractions)
Braxton Hicks contractions may have been bothering you for a while, but if they:
✔️ If it has become regular
✔️ If it gets more and more severe
✔️ If it doesn’t go away when you change your stance
Congratulations, labor may have started! 🤯 Time yourself and call your doctor now!
😰 Anxiety and Anticipation Stress
This wait is truly one of the hardest parts mentally! But rest assured, the baby will come —he’s just waiting his time. Try to focus on things that will reduce your stress! 🎶 🛁 🧘♀️
⏳ Signs of Labor at 40 Weeks
Are you still pregnant? 😅 Yes, labor symptoms may not start until the 40th week. But don’t worry, you will meet your baby very soon! Here are the important signs to look out for:
📞 Situations When You Should Call Your Doctor Immediately
- If your contractions are becoming more regular and intense 🌀
- Water Breaking (Amniotic Fluid Leaking) 💦 If you have a constant, watery, and unstoppable discharge, this most likely means your water has broken!
- Bloody or thick mucous discharge (may be caused by the mucus plug falling out!)
🤔 Is It Normal to Be 40 Weeks Pregnant?
Of course! Pregnancy doesn’t actually last exactly 9 months, but 40 weeks. 📆 That’s why your doctor keeps track of your weeks. You may feel like your baby is a little late, but it’s actually coming right on time!
🧐 Why Is Baby Born Late?
There is no clear reason why your baby might be overdue , but here are some possible causes:
- If you have a genetic history of late birth in your family
- If it’s your first pregnancy 👶
- If your previous births were also delayed
- The gender of the baby (there are some theories that boys may be born later!)
⏳ How Long to Wait After Week 40?
Your baby is considered normal until the 42nd week , but your doctor will monitor you closely during this time. 🩺
🍼 What Can You Do To Induce Labor At 40 Weeks Pregnant?
If your baby doesn’t seem very eager to be born , you can try some safe methods to speed up the birth:
✔ Go for a walk! 🏃♀️ (Gravity and movement can help baby descend into the birth canal.)
✔ Have sex! 🤭 (Semen contains substances that soften the cervix, and orgasm can stimulate the uterine muscles.)
✔ You can try acupuncture! 🪡
🚫 But be careful! Do not resort to unnatural methods without doctor approval. Especially:
❌ Drinking castor oil (Activates the intestines but not the uterus!)
❌ Herbal cures or medicines (Some can be dangerous!)
❌ Nipple stimulation (It may cause too strong contractions and harm the baby.)
🏥 Induction of Labor with Medical Intervention in the 40th Week of Pregnancy
Your doctor may recommend medical induction to start labor. This is usually done to:
🔸 Having complications such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia
🔸 Decrease in the baby’s water or aging of the placenta
🔸 Risks due to twin pregnancy or previous birth history
But if you and your baby are healthy, your doctor may want you to wait a few more days or weeks ⏳
💡 Things to do in the 40th week of pregnancy
Doesn’t your baby seem very eager to come? ⏳ Now you’re just in the waiting game! But here are a few suggestions to get through this process more comfortably and prepared :
🛏️ Prepare Your Bed
Water can break unexpectedly! You can protect your mattress by laying down a waterproof mattress protector . This protector will also come in handy for postpartum breastfeeding and diaper accidents !
🧘♀️ Relax and Meditate
The excitement and uncertainty of giving birth can be a bit stressful. Download a meditation app and try to relax with breathing exercises. This will not only calm you down, but it can also help you fall asleep more easily.
🤲 Learn to Relax When Contractions Come
Instead of tense your entire body during labor pains, try to consciously relax. You can get through contractions more easily by doing a body scan (close your eyes, feel your entire body from head to toe, and notice and relax any areas that are tense). Don’t forget to breathe deeply!
🚗 Keep the Car Ready
You don’t want to stop for gas on your way to the hospital! 🚙 Fill up your car, check your hospital bag one last time, and review your travel plan.
📌 Checklist for Week 40 of Pregnancy
⏳ Is the baby still inside? Be patient! You should be ready for birth at any time this week. Here’s what you need to do:
✅ Talk to your doctor about inducing labor – If your baby still doesn’t want to come, you need to find out under what circumstances labor can be induced .
✅ Get a non-stress test (NST) – If your doctor recommends it, you can have a test that measures your baby’s movements and heart rate .
✅ Try to induce labor naturally – Take a walk, take a warm shower, eat dates, or spend time with your partner (yes, some say this can induce labor!). But remember, your doctor will give you the most accurate information!
The baby is coming any minute! 🤰 💕 Stay calm, rest and get ready for the big moment! 🚼 ✨
