Low Progesterone During Pregnancy

The hormone progesterone is a hormone that prepares the lining of the uterus for pregnancy. After you ovulate, your body produces the hormone progesterone and will continue to produce it if you become pregnant. The exact effect of low progesterone levels during pregnancy on pregnancy is not known, but progesterone supplements are sometimes prescribed to women with certain risk factors to prevent preterm birth and miscarriage.

What is progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone produced by the female body after ovulation. This hormone prepares the inner lining of the uterus for pregnancy. Progesterone levels rise with each menstrual cycle and then fall again. If you don’t get pregnant, progesterone decreases and you get your period again.

If you get pregnant, you continue to produce the hormone progesterone, which keeps the uterine lining healthy and prevents your body from contracting as the uterus grows. Progesterone is also involved in the development of milk-producing glands in preparation for breastfeeding and plays a role in milk production after birth. Progesterone levels increase throughout pregnancy.

Low progesterone is also known as luteal deficiency. This is because the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle begins after ovulation, when progesterone production increases.

Low progesterone during pregnancy

The effects of low progesterone levels during pregnancy on pregnancy are not fully known. Some experts say that a low level of progesterone hormone during pregnancy has no effect on pregnancy, while others say that without enough progesterone, the uterus cannot prepare for pregnancy and the embryo will not implant and develop in the uterine lining.

It is a well-known fact that women who have had a miscarriage tend to have lower progesterone levels. However, it is not known exactly whether low progesterone hormone levels cause miscarriage or the effect of low progesterone on low progesterone.

Normal progesterone values

Low progesterone values

Progesterone levels are not something that is constantly controlled during pregnancy. Depending on a wide variety of factors, there are fluctuations in the figures indicating the level of progesterone in the blood. Your doctor will evaluate whether to take a progesterone supplement during pregnancy, taking into account risk factors in your history.

Your doctor may want to check progesterone levels to detect problems with menstrual cycles or ovulation.

Normal progesterone ranges:

  • Before ovulation: Less than 1 nanogram per milliliter (ng/mL)
  • Midmenstruation: 5 to 20 ng/mL
  • First trimester of pregnancy: 11.2 to 90 ng/ml
  • Second trimester of pregnancy: 25.6 to 89.4 ng/ml
  • Third trimester: 48 to 150 ng/ml

Does low progesterone cause infertility?

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that low progesterone alone can cause infertility. However, when considered together with other causes of infertility, it can be said that it contributes to infertility. In addition, low prpgesteron can cause unsuccessful implantation (implantation) of the embryo.

If progesterone levels are tested during the menstrual cycle and it is seen that there is low progesterone, this may be an indication of ovulation or infertility.

What causes low progestereon?

It is not known exactly what causes low progesterone, but low progesterone levels may be linked to:

  • Those who have had a miscarriage before or who are likely to have miscarriage
  • Those with a history of ectopic pregnancy
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or no menstrual periods at all

What are the symptoms of low progesterone?

Symptoms of low progesterone include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles or no periods at all
  • Headache or migraine
  • Mood changes
  • Frequent miscarriages
  • Complaints of spotting and abdominal pain during pregnancy

Keep in mind that the discomfort and negativity mentioned above can be caused by more than one other health problem.

Does low progesterone cause miscarriage?

Women who have had a miscarriage tend to have lower progesterone levels, but it’s not known which causes which.

Studies have shown that women who have their corpus luteum (progesterone-producing gland) removed before 8 weeks of pregnancy have their pregnancy resulting in miscarriage.

Does progesterone supplementation prevent miscarriage?

In a study of more than 800 women in the U.S., women with a history of unexplained miscarriage were given progesterone supplements. No significantly higher live birth rates were found among women who received progesterone therapy.

But other studies have shown that progesterone supplements work for some women in certain situations. Giving progesterone supplements, especially to women with recurrent miscarriages (2 or 3 recurrent miscarriages), has been shown to prevent miscarriages.
